We know that looking after our greatest resource, our people, is crucial. So as part of our benefits package, each year we offer you the opportunity to give a little back with a paid volunteering day away from work.

“It's great to be able to have a paid day for volunteering and do something that you really care about.”

Having this time off has helped our employees support great causes in their local communities including Helen Neary, who works as part of our Global Risk Group in the UK.

Helen talks to us about using her volunteering day to create something very special for her local village.

Tell us more about what you've used your volunteering day for

Where I live, we don't really have a lot for kids to do over 8 years old, so my volunteering day has been used to put together the development and funding of a pump track within my rural village. A pump track is a multi-wheeled small sports track which you can ride anything from scooters to skateboards to BMX on.

I've used my volunteering time to research suppliers and put together tender documents to seek people who have done similar in their villages. I also helped organise a big village crowdfunding day where everyone came out to see what the track might look like, we put out a huge display in the village hall and we were lucky that within a few days we'd actually exceeded our target, so it was pretty cool.

After several months of helping monitor the build of the pump track, we got it open ready for the school half term and the village absolutely love it, it’s fantastic to see the track now being used, we’ve had every wheel it was designed for riding it, I didn’t know we had so much hidden talent in the village!

Why would you encourage others to make use of their volunteer day?

I would encourage other employees to make use of their volunteer day because of the feel-good factor to be honest with you, it's great to be able to have a paid day and give a little back to your community or a charity that you feel really strongly about.

I'm really lucky I've been able to achieve something quite large for my community, but it doesn't really matter how big it is, it's something that you can feel good about yourself and hopefully involve your team in as well.

Being able to make this a reality for my community would never have happened without my Computershare volunteer day which I am very grateful for.
