Simin Allahyari, Senior Information Security Analyst at Computershare, began her journey as a Junior Analyst three years ago in Melbourne, Australia. In this conversation, Simin shares details on her career progression, her experiences as a woman in technology and the supportive culture that makes Computershare unique.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you enjoy outside of work?
A: I started here as a Junior Analyst in the Australia Global Information Security team, I joined after finishing university in cybersecurity and returning from maternity leave. With my IT background and a previous degree in Computer Engineering, I quickly found my place in cybersecurity. Over the past three years at Computershare, I’ve grown into a senior role which has been a great journey. Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my family. I have an 8-year-old daughter who keeps me busy! I also volunteer as the team manager for her basketball team, which is a lot of fun.
Q: Could you describe your role?
A: I handle a lot of business-as-usual tasks, including responding to security-related consultancy requests. Within my team, I’m primarily responsible for maintaining our ISO 27001 certification, which is a global standard for information security management systems. For a good proportion of the year, I am dedicated to ensuring our controls align with ISO requirements. It’s a big responsibility, but one I really enjoy.
Q: What attracted you to join Computershare, and how has the company supported your career goals?
A: I was keen to work for a global company, and Computershare was my first professional experience in Australia. Before that, all my work experience was in Iran, my home country. Although I had a background in IT, I hadn’t worked specifically in the security field before. So, finding a role in cybersecurity at a company like Computershare felt like a lucky break. My manager and the wider team have been incredibly supportive. There’s a strong and positive culture here, and I’ve always felt encouraged to grow. It’s given me the foundation to build a career and move into a more senior role.
Q: How has Computershare supported your career development?
A: I’ve had a positive experience with career development here. I’ve never been turned down for a course, workshop, or training session I wanted to attend. Since joining, I’ve completed two certifications and taken part in many learning opportunities. My manager has always been supportive, and that’s made a big difference.
Q: Have you faced any challenges as a woman in technology, and how did you overcome them?
A: Balancing work and personal life are one of the biggest challenges. As women, we often carry dual responsibilities - not just professionally, but also at home. In terms of workplace challenges, I haven’t faced any major barriers. When I first joined the team, I felt the need to prove myself and build confidence. I think that’s something many people experience, regardless of gender. Over time, I started to believe in my own abilities, asked lots of questions, and found my voice. That process helped me grow and feel more empowered.
Q: How do you balance your work and personal life, and have you received support from Computershare?
A: It can be hard at times, especially when important events at home clash with work responsibilities. But overall, I’ve felt very supported. My manager is always understanding and flexible. Whenever I’ve needed to finish early or take time out for personal commitments, I’ve just had to communicate it, and I’ve always received support. That flexibility makes a big difference.
Q: What advice would you give to other women starting out a career in technology?
A: Don’t be afraid to try something new. Ask questions, keep learning, and surround yourself with people who support you. If you can, find a mentor, someone who can offer guidance and share valuable advice about your career and development. Having that kind of support can make a big difference.
Q: Finally, what really stands out for you about working at Computershare?
A: Definitely the people. Not just in my immediate team, but across the wider business, everyone is friendly, approachable and always willing to help. That kind of culture makes a huge difference and is one of the main reasons I really enjoy working here.
