Cyber security can sometimes feel overwhelming, with new threats making headlines almost daily. But one of the key messages from our recent Secure Together events was refreshingly simple: some of the strongest cyber defences don't rely on technology alone, they rely on people.

To explore this idea, we brought together clients and colleagues for a series of engaging sessions focused on practical ways to reduce cyber risk in everyday situations.

In Sydney, participants put their skills to the test in an interactive cyber escape room. Working against the clock, teams were challenged to identify suspicious activity, verify information and respond to potential threats under pressure. It wasn't just a race to the finish, it was a real-world reminder of how quickly cyber risks can emerge when something appears legitimate at first glance.

Congratulations to our winning teams, "Dave" and "Hacksta la vista", who navigated the challenges with impressive awareness, teamwork and critical thinking.

The exercise highlighted an important reality for organisations today. As AI-generated content and deepfakes become more sophisticated, distinguishing between genuine and fraudulent communications is becoming increasingly difficult. That's why strong human behaviours remain one of the most effective lines of defence.

Building on these learnings, a follow-up virtual session focused on practical actions that can immediately strengthen cyber resilience.

The advice was straightforward but powerful: pause before clicking, verify unexpected requests and report anything that feels unusual.

Simple measures can make a significant difference, including:

  • Check circle iconUsing passkeys where available
  • Check circle iconKeeping devices and applications up to date
  • Check circle iconUsing a password manager to strengthen credential security
  • Check circle iconReporting suspicious activity early

Just as importantly, effective cyber security depends on creating a culture where people feel comfortable speaking up without fear of blame. When concerns are raised quickly, organisations are often in a much stronger position to respond and minimise potential impacts.

Beyond secure technology, we are focused on providing trusted processes, practical guidance and real-world expertise that help organisations navigate evolving risks with confidence.

A special thank you to Kevin Prior and Justin Steven from Tanto Security, whose expertise helped translate attacker techniques into practical, everyday actions that organisations can implement today.

Cyber security is a shared responsibility. By combining the right technology, trusted expertise, and a few simple habits, we can all play a role in building stronger protection and greater confidence in every communication.
