Hong Kong – Computershare (ASX: CPU) has today announced the launch of free weekly tutorial classes to be held at its recently renovated counter at the Hopewell Centre in Wan Chai. Aimed at those over 60 who may be less familiar with using a mobile app to manage their securities, the sessions will last around 60 minutes, and cover topics including ‘Understanding USM’, Using Computershare’s Investor Centre Mobile App’, ‘Creating a USI account’, ‘Connecting registered shareholdings’ and ‘Managing personal information.’
The classes are being introduced ahead of the planned launch of the Uncertificated Securities Market (USM) on November 16th, 2026. After this date, any new IPOs will only issue digital shares and existing listed stocks will start to offer shares digitally on a phased migration basis from February 2027. It will be advantageous for shareholders to start to learn about using an app to manage uncertificated shares ahead of time, equipping them to manage their assets quickly and easily once digital shares start to be issued.
Led by experienced and friendly investor service team members, the Tuesday afternoon tutorial sessions will give shareholders an early preview of how to use Computershare’s Investor Centre mobile app. The team will also introduce Computershare’s support materials featuring ‘Stocky’, a friendly mascot providing tips and advice, as well as Ned and Jessica, shareholder characters who are learning how to manage their securities digitally. These educational materials and Computershare’s tutorial classes will support investors in migrating to the paperless era.
To book one of the free classes, shareholders should simply apply online. Classes can accommodate up to 20 people in each session, and those who attend will receive a set of coupons for shops and restaurants at the Hopewell Centre.
According to the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), the USM initiative will provide an efficient means for investors to hold and manage securities in their own name electronically, using platforms that are operated by Approved Securities Registrars and connected to systems of Hong Kong Securities Clearing Company Limited (HKSCC). Computershare is applying to be an ASR ahead of USM’s implementation.
Stuart Irving, CEO of Computershare Group visited the first class yesterday and said: “USM aligns with the broader goal of strengthening Hong Kong’s position as a leading international financial centre by enhancing market efficiency, transparency and accessibility for both local and international investors. Computershare's investor education initiatives play a significant role in supporting this vision and we look forward to welcoming investors at our counter, and online, to learn more about how they can easily participate”.
Gloria Kwok, Head of Customer Operations, said: “These tutorial classes are an inclusive measure designed to help ensure that older shareholders are not left behind as the market becomes more digital. By offering practical, step-by-step support with tasks such as creating a USI profile online, we hope to give them the confidence and reassurance they need to manage their shareholdings independently.”
For investors who wish to hold securities digitally in their own name in the USM era, the first step is to open a USI profile with the relevant Approved Share Registrar (ASR). With Computershare, individual investors can already apply online by providing proof of identity and basic personal details; while joint holders and corporate entities will need to complete the process in person at the service counter, for document and signature verification. Individual investors who would like to learn more about USM and to get support in opening a USI profile with Computershare should consider signing up for one of the free tutorials.
